MetaTrader 5 for Linux

Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. Linux systems are widely used in smartphones and server hardware. 

One of the Linux features is the absence of a unified distribution kit. Different groups of developers work on several Linux versions including Debian, Mint, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Gentoo, etc.

Below is one of the possible methods of installing  MetaTrader 5  on a popular distribution kit Ubuntu. It includes 1) installing  Wine and  2) installing (opening) MT5 via Wine.

*Wine is free software that allows users of the Unix-based systems to run an application developed for the Microsoft Windows systems.   

Note that Wine is not a fully stable application. Thus, some functions in the applications you start under it may work improperly or fail to work.

How to install Wine on Ubuntu

All applications on Ubuntu are installed from the packages contained in repositories. In the latest versions of Ubuntu, the required Wine installation repository is already available on the system.

To install Wine, run this command on the command line (called "Terminal" in Ubuntu):

              
 sudo apt-get install wine-stable  
            

This will install the latest stable version of Wine.

Wine creates a separate virtual logical drive for every installed program. The default path of the terminal's data folder is: Home\.wine\drive_c\Program Files\MetaTrader 5

How to run MetaTrader 5

To start using MetaTrader 5:

1) Download and run the installation file.

2) Copy the entire folder of the client terminal installed on Microsoft Windows.
 

MT5 installation  includes the following steps: 

1. Download the installation file from the website (PLATFORMS >Trading Platforms > MT5).

2. The system will prompt you to open the file using Wine. Select this option and click OK. The MetaTrader 5 installer will be launched.

3. Complete the installation steps.
   

4. After installation is complete, you can launch  MetaTrader 5 by running the  terminal.exe  file.

Copying the MT5 folder  includes the following steps:

1. Copy the entire folder of the client terminal previously installed on Microsoft Windows.

   

2. After copying is complete, run the  terminal.exe  file of MetaTrader 5. Wine will be used automatically to open the file.
